Welcome to the second edition of the 2009 PCPC electronic newsletter – we hope that you enjoyed the first issue, and that you found it both interesting and enjoyable!
Please let us know if you have any information or ideas to contribute to future issues… we look forward to hearing from you (info@pcpcontario.org)
In the last issue, we began discussing the importance of evaluations for the Centre, its programs and staff.
It is important to begin thinking about the evaluation process now, and the following checklist will help you in the coming months:
Example: The Human Resources Committee uses the information collected regarding staff members and re-examines past contracts, and meets with the Financial Committee regarding the budget for the upcoming contract year; asks staff for their input and reviews the performance management files.
Example: The Marketing Committee should have an idea of how many children are enrolled for the following school year, what type of marketing they will use to keep enrolment on the rise and where and when this marketing will take place.
Centres can measure their success by three different rates of return all relating to the rate at which families return to the Centre, although each measure will depend on the length of time they have been operating.
Remember: Free copies of the evaluation handbooks can be downloaded from the PCPC website www.pcpcontario.org, by clicking on the Member’s Only section.
Humber College’s post-graduate Fundraising and Volunteer Management students currently need non-profit groups as clients for five different projects in the next few weeks. Would you be interest?
The five projects that each student must complete include:

For more information on these projects or for specific project details, please contact Ken Wyman at Ken.Wyman@humber.ca
Note: All cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you may start to receive sales calls, and unfortunately, you will be charged for these calls.
To prevent this, register with the National Do Not Call List, and your phone number will be blocked for five years. You must make the telephone call with the cell phone that you wish to have blocked (the call cannot be made from a different phone number).
Registration can be completed by:

Best Start: Ontario’s Maternal Newborn and Early Child Development Resource Centre supports service providers across the province of Ontario who are working on health promotion projects to improve the health of expectant parents and their young children. The Centre provides workshops and conferences, resources, consultations, and subject-specific information.
Visiting the Best Start website (http://www.beststart.org/index_eng.html) will provide your Centre with a gateway to many free resources.
From the Homepage, find the Resources link in the left-hand column, and click to open. This will open an index of the resources (fact sheets, brochures, decals, and posters to program planning guides and reports) that are available. To have these resources in print format, Best Start charges minimal fees, but the materials can also be downloaded in PDF format for free and are available for you to view and print for yourself!Another valuable resource for your Centre is available from Best Start; the main resources page at http://www.beststart.org/resources/hlthy_chld_dev/index.html has a wide variety of information available, but a particularly great toolkit is available at the bottom of the page…
This toolkit includes a variety of materials in a handy, ready-to-go ‘briefcase’ for promoting and delivering physical activity opportunities to young children.
Please note: This toolkit can be ordered from Best Start for $25.00 plus PST, or it can be downloaded (for free!) in Binder Contents available in PDF format directly from the website.
Meridian Credit Union Unveils Volunteer Matching Program!
Meridian Credit Union employees are on the hunt for volunteer opportunities that will help to build stronger neighbourhoods in the communities where they live and work. The credit union has developed a matching program that helps employees find volunteer positions with local organizations in the communities served by Meridian. Volunteer positions posted on Meridian’s Intranet will reach more than 1,000 Meridian employees. This program is designed to make volunteering more accessible for Meridian staff members, while also assisting local organizations in finding committed and valuable volunteers. To post a volunteer position, visit http://www.meridiancu.ca and click on Community, then the ‘Volunteer Matching Program’ earlug on the right-hand side of the homepage.
Remember that all of these fundraising ideas, and many more can be found in the Governance Series Workshops (Member’s Only Section) of the PCPC website www.pcpcontario.org
Auctions are usually crowd pleasers — the secret is to have plenty of good quality items to auction off.
Joint or ‘Open’ Auctions: The more the merrier (try approaching other groups to join in your event) and the bigger the profits from the auction fundraiser!
Restaurant Auctions: This is a great way to promote community restaurants in the neighbourhood or district, while also being an excellent way for the restaurant to advertise and gain word-of-mouth promotion. Restaurants donate gift certificates to their establishment to be auctioned off!

Canadians consume more macaroni and cheese than any other nation on earth!
The following four solutions will help you reduce your carbon dioxide output, therefore helping in the fight against climate change!
Use a power strip for your computer, monitor, fax, copier, TV, DVD player, and cell phone chargers, and switch it off when those devices aren’t in use. Most electronics draw power even when they are off, including empty chargers in standby mode!
Change your light bulbs – swap out incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents!
Turn off incandescent lights when leaving a room for even just a few minutes. If you use fluorescents, turn them off if you’re leaving for 15 minutes!
Cancel catalogues and remove yourself from junk-mail lists!
