PCPC has launched a brand new look for its website http://www.pcpcontario.org
Have You Checked It Out?
PCPC has had a presence on the World Wide Web for 10 years now, ever since our modest beginnings at www.web.net/~pcpc.
As our resources have expanded, so has the range of tools we can use to more effectively serve our members and the general public. The new website uses a content management system (CMS) that allows you to access the full range of our information more effectively and smoothly.
As an example of what a CMS can do (the one we are using is called Textpattern), take a look at our list of Member Centres. Not only is the main Centres page produced from a database, but each Centre’s information page features a Google map (created on the fly to show the location). There is also a larger Google map which shows all of the PCPC Member Centres, with pop-up information for each Centre.
Another major step forward is that our Member Pages are now fully integrated into the main site, allowing members to navigate freely between the password-protected pages and the public site. Our Member Pages have grown greatly in the past two years due to our Governance project and other value-added resources for members.
On the public site, our content has expanded as well, with new features such as our e-newsletter (you will soon be able to subscribe or change your existing subscription to our email bulletins from within the website) and a wider range of material available in both HTML and PDF formats.
Finally, this site was designed with accessibility and flexibility in mind from the start – both disabled users (blind, partially sighted, motor challenged) and people who use cell phones, PDAs and smaller computers, will find it easy to use!
We hope that you enjoy the new website, and we encourage your feedback by contacting the PCPC office at info@pcpcontario.org!
We are delighted to announce our new collaboration with Mary Stuart, Early Childhood Development Specialist! Through her new company Childlife…Inspire Their Best!, PCPC members have access to expertise on early childhood development through customized workshops, teleconferences, consultations and strategies.
Through these services, you enable optimum development and all things possible for your kids!
Board attendance can be a problem right from the election date but usually, half-way through a school year, a Centre will notice that ‘volunteer burnout’ starts to happen — attendance at Board meetings starts to decline!
To review the Sample Board Attendance Policy which you may wish to institute before your Centre is in a situation that is unmanageable, click on the Member Tab (you will need to sign in with your name and password — the same ones used to access the Member’s Only Section on the old website)
‘Conflicts of Interest’ occurs when an employee, volunteer, student or Board of Directors member…
Although you may wish to think that conflicts of interest don’t occur in your Centre, and therefore you don’t need a signed policy outlining how the employees, volunteers, students, Board of Directors members and families should act, it is an important document, and each and every Centre should have one and abide by it!
To review a sample Conflict of Interest Policy ,click on the Member Tab (you will need to sign in with your name and password — the same ones used to access the Member’s Only Section on the old website)
Remember that all of these fundraising ideas, and many more can be found in the Governance Series Workshops (Member’s Only Section) of the PCPC website www.pcpcontario.org
Garage and Rummage Sales: A garage or rummage sale can be as big or small as you want to make it.
Appeal to your members to send in their ‘junk’. One person’s junk may be someone else’s treasure. Ask your members to start their spring cleaning now.
Advertise your sale in the local media and put up posters around the neighbourhood – you will need lots of volunteers for this type of event!
PCPC has done a tremendous amount of work over the past year to assist our member non-profit Centres to locate sources of funding and identify those with giving interests that match your organization’s unique needs, through utilization of our membership at the highly effective online resources Imagine Canada and Big Online.
A recent article in the Globe & Mail business section states that charities and other non-profit organizations may receive less funding from their traditional donors in time of economic uncertainty as individuals reconsider their financial commitments. This is the time for you and other non-profits to consider Foundation funding. Their giving will not be immediately affected, as they invest for the long-term and economic fluctuations are often less detrimental to them. Foundations exist solely to give away money, and are required to give a minimum of 3.5% of their assets in grants every year!
It is also worth noting that of the nearly 10,000 registered Foundations in Canada, two-thirds of them still do not have a web presence. This makes it impossible for you to find them through internet searching. If you want to take advantage of Foundation funding and all of the benefits it can bring to you, please visit the PCPC website (www.pcpcontario.org), Members’ Only Section where we have a directory of 160 Foundations just waiting to hear from organizations like you!
