The Art of Limit Setting & Self Control

[March 19, 2009]

Research concludes that teaching children the imperative lessons of waiting, delaying gratification and how to self regulate their behaviour and emotions are the best tools for later success in life and play a role in the prevention of mental health disorders.

INSTANT, QUICK solutions only increase the behaviours you don’t want!

So what can we do now to help foster and inspire their best?

8 Simple Steps for Success

  1. Understand children’s behaviour
  2. Understand ages and stages of children’s development
  3. View “misbehaviours” as learning opportunities
  4. Set reasonable limits and follow through
  5. Teach children how to manage their feelings and emotions
  6. Catch them doing something right and tell them
  7. Have fun! Play together: scribble, smell the roses, squish playdough, play dress up, day dream – let them lead and you follow
  8. Live in the moment: listen to what they have to say; give them your full attention.
